President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin received his second dose of the AstraZenca vaccine today, Friday April 12 2021, making him fully immunized.

The President, was the first person on Dominican soil to receive a covid-19 vaccination when he and his wife took their first dose of the vaccine on February 12 2021 at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital.

President Savarin stated that while Dominica has managed the pandemic well so far, citizens must do what is required to protect themselves.

“I have had no side effects from the first jab and I do not expect that I will have any side effects from the second jab. The jab itself is painless and I know that there are some people who have a certain reaction to needles but this is an essential, lifesaving activity. This is not a Dominican situation, it’s a universal situation, and it is a pandemic. We have done very well; so far we have managed very well. But things can change and therefore we have to keep doing the things that need to be done,” President Savarin stated.

President Savarin added that if Dominica is to stimulate the activity, the country must achieve herd immunity.

“Tourism is a very important aspect of our economic life ad we are expecting that the travel agencies, the airlines, the cruise industry will be requiring persons accessing their services to be vaccinated. We who are offering the service here, must ourselves, be able to give them the guarantee that they are coming into a situation where we have already achieved herd immunity, that is to say in excess of 70 to 80 percent of our population has been vaccinated,” the President noted.

President Savarin added that Dominica is fortunate to have received these vaccines, noting that although the country has not yet achieved its mark for herd immunity, everyone should make it their civic duty to come forward and get vaccinated.

Dominica received its first batch of AstraZeneca vaccines, a total of seventy thousand doses from the people of India on February 09 2021. Since then 20,000 doses have come from China, while another 28,800 doses have come from the COVAX facility.
