Dominica joins the global community today in celebrating International Youth Day, with the Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Development, Hon. Oscar George, praising young people as the “heartbeat of our nation” and “main chapter” of the country’s story.
In an address marking the occasion, Hon. George reflected on the day’s history, noting that International Youth Day was first observed in 2000 following a United Nations resolution. Each year, the event highlights the challenges and opportunities facing youth worldwide, with themes linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This year’s focus reminds us that youth are not just beneficiaries of development—they are essential partners in achieving it,” he said.
The Minister saluted Dominica’s young men and women for their contributions in fields such as education, climate action, entrepreneurship, sports, and the arts.
“From the villages across the length and breadth of this lovely country to the streets of the capital city, our youth are shaping Dominica’s present and laying the platform for our future growth and development,” he said.
Hon. George highlighted that the 2025–2026 National Budget includes millions of dollars for programmes aimed at equipping young people with skills, connecting them to jobs, and opening pathways in agriculture, tourism, technology, sports, culture, and entrepreneurship.
Specific initiatives include expanding CVQ and NVQ qualifications, establishing a Digital Fabrication Lab at the Dominica State College, and financing studies in engineering, aviation, renewable energy, and environmental science.
“This Government’s investments in scholarship programmes, youth skills training, digital skills, and job creation are designed so that when opportunity knocks, you are ready to answer,” he said.
Hon. George urged young people not only to seize opportunities but also to create them.
“The call is not just to be recipients of opportunity but to be creators of it. Start providing leadership through the formation of youth groups, volunteer in your community, and use your skills to mentor others,” he encouraged.
The Minister also called on the wider society to play its part.
“We have a shared responsibility to promote the positives of our young people, to celebrate their achievements, and to provide the guidance and example that will inspire them to be true role models for the next generation,” he said.
Concluding his address, Hon. George reminded the nation of the vital role young people play in shaping the country’s future.
“International Youth Day reminds us that you are not a side note in Dominica’s story—you are the main chapter. Your energy, your dreams, and your determination are the true engines of our sustainable future,” he stated.
The Minister ended with a rallying call: “Step forward in faith, in courage, and in unity. This is your moment, and together we will build the Dominica you deserve and the world needs.”
