Prime Minister Hon Roosevelt Skerrit has called on nationals to assist local police in the fight against the illicit drug trade.
The Dominica leader, addressing residents of the Roseau Valley last Friday said a significant amount of resources is being spent in Dominica and the region to fight crime.
He says, however, that nationals must join these efforts to maintain safety and security in their communities.
“Every single one of us in these communities must stand in condemnation of the drug traffickers in this country who are attempting to destroy our young people and to destroy our nation. The Police and the Government will do all it has to do but we need the cooperation of the general public in fighting this very dangerous aspect of our society. One drug trafficker in this country is one too many.”
“When the Police Force is doing its work, we sometimes condemn it for doing its work. For us to have a society where we can enjoy the way of life that we are accustomed to, that is to say going to the falls, the hot springs, the river at any time of day or night, [we must respect each other’s rights.] You can only continue to have that when people are prepared to respect your rights as a citizen. I find these days that people believe that they can disrespect people’s rights. We should be able to walk the streets freely in Dominica instead of being afraid of someone coming to harm us and therefore I am calling on us to assist the police in fighting this very dangerous trend.”
