The Government of Dominica has recognized the value and importance of higher education and has set as its policy the goal of having one college graduate per household by the year 2015.

An ongoing project which will assist Government in achieving this goal is the Chinese funded new Dominica State College.

The state of the art educational institution when complete will supersede all educational institutions on the island providing quality Education for Dominicans.

Marketing Manager of Shanghai Construction Group Sammy Ye during an exclusive interview with the Government Information Service said the project which began over a year ago is now at an advanced stage and should be complete by October of 2013.

“This project started in October 2011 and this contract is for two years. You can see it is almost complete. We will submit most of the furniture for the project. We are expecting that by next October to finish but importantly we need to make sure that the quality of this project is good” he said.

The Chinese official is pleased with the design of the new state college and is optimistic about the prospects this new facility will bring to the country and its people.

“This new state college building is the biggest in Dominica. I think maybe in the future this state college will be to the benefit of Caribbean students. This location in Stockfarm is very good with a very nice view. The design of the College is multi functional and I think in the future it will give the best surrounding for Dominicans to study.”

As part of the contract the Chinese construction company will refurbish sections of the old state college and construct new buildings. The designs for that aspect of the project have already been submitted to Government.

The New Dominica state college project is being funded through a thirty million dollar concessionary loan from the China Export Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

The new State College is one of several projects currently being constructed by the Shanghai Construction Group in Dominica. Another major project being constructed is the new State House building which is now ninety percent complete.
