Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has cautioned riders of motorcycles to take greater responsibility to protect themselves when riding.

The Prime Minister’s comments came in response to the increasing number of young men who have lost their lives as a result of motor cycle accidents in recent times.

Just last Friday, Carlson Corbette a young man of Checkhall died following a motorcycle accident which occurred under the Canefield cliff.

“These are personal responsibilities.  It’s unfortunate that we have these accidents all the time but we keep talking about the need to be safe and to use caution but we cannot be riding and driving in the streets at the speeds we are and not expect to have difficulties.  At the end of the day it’s going to boil down to individual responsibility.  Yes we can have legislation, we can have speed limits but I have to make a personal decision on whether I am going to go beyond the speed limit or not and if we don’t, the consequences can be severe.  It’s really unfortunate that we continue to have these motorcycle accidents with people left behind to mourn the deaths of these young people.”

The Prime Minister is asking the public to be extra vigilant of motorcycles on the road to prevent future tragedies.

Meanwhile traffic authorities are encouraging motorcyclists to ride safely and defensively, while drivers need to look out for motorcyclists who are sharing the road.
