The village of Morne Prosper is set to benefit from numerous development interventions during 2022.
These developments fall in line with Government’s goal of building the world’s first climate resilient nation with modern and resilient infrastructure.
As these plans continue to come to fruition, Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit led a small delegation on a of visit project sites in Morne Prosper for an update on ongoing projects and to inspect future project sites.
Member of Parliament for the Roseau Valley Constituency, Hon. Dr. Irving McIntyre stated that the new water supply in Morne Prosper will greatly benefit farmers in the area.
“We then proceeded to Morne Prosper and we know Morne Prosper is a farming village and what’s so important for farmers is water and irrigation and access to their farms. So we visited the new water supply system in Morne Prosper. The water comes from Wotten Waven and it is pumped up to Morne Prosper where we have a very massive storage tank with lines coming down to the rest of the village,” Hon. McIntyre stated.
He noted that this system would also benefit residents domestically as water shortage and quality of water has posed a problem over the years.
“During the dry season we have a little shortage of water in Morne Prosper and in the rainy season we have another issue in terms of the quality of the water. But with this new water system we solve both problems and so from a domestic point of view, it is an excellent intervention. And we also have to consider the farming part and it would be interesting to see how the productivity levels in our farms will increase because of a better water system and the possibility for irrigation as well,” Dr. McIntyre explained.
Minister for Public Works and the Digital Economy, Hon. Cassanni Laville further detailed some of the works done at the Morne Prosper water supply.
He explained that the project started off as a BNTF funded project at a cost of seven hundred thousand dollars ($700,000), but Government has since then injected a sum of eight hundred and three thousand dollars ($803,000) in collaboration with DOWASCO to complete the project.
“Right now in the Morne Prosper area we have already constructed a 60,000 gallon tank. The water lines from the water intake to the pump has already been built. The pump house has been constructed in Wotten Waven. The water pumps have also been procured by DOWASCO and they are in the process of installing these pumps. Distribution lines remain to be installed in Morne Prosper. So that is a project that we are pleased with,” Hon. Laville stated.
He added that Government is “happy about the improvements that would be made in the water supply in that area and we are satisfied that there will certainly be more stability in water supply and resilience added to water supply and distribution network in that area.”
Other development aspects in Morne Prosper were also visited during the tour. According to the Roseau Valley MP, the Morne Prosper road network was also inspected with special attention paid to the road next to the playing field.
Hon. McIntyre noted that “we need to get that road fixed. We have quite a few villagers in that area that access that road and it has been a little difficult of late. I was really pleased that the Prime Minister could come here and take a look at it that will be dealt with as well.”
The delegation also visited the village’s basketball court which is being rehabilitated under the Basic Needs Trust Fund 9 programme. The primary school was also fenced as part of the BNTF-9 programme.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Skerrit stated that despite the numerous investments that have already been made in the village of Morne Prosper, there are more interventions in line to ensure a better life for residents.
“Morne Proper is a pace we have spent a lot of money. In the last five years, I mean in roads alone we have spent in excess of twelve million dollars. We have improved the school, we have constructed roads. We have constructed the basketball court. We are nearing completion of a very expensive water system that will house some sixty thousand gallons of water which will certainly help with agriculture in particular especially during the dry season. But of course we are looking at a couple additional interventions, including an over bridge which we have been speaking about. And by going there and talking to the local people, I believe that we have found a solution to that particular problem,” PM Skerrit noted.
