Ministry of Agriculture continues on its quest to diversify the sector

Agriculture officials here continue to promote diversification within the sector.

During a recent panel discussion, Director of Agriculture, Ricky Brumant says the diversification scheme is part of efforts by the current administration to increase competitiveness and creativity among locals.

“We work with a number of strategic crops and this includes root crops which are yams, dasheen and sweet potatoes for example.  We can also talk about coconuts, cocoa, coffee, passion-fruit and ginger as some of those strategic crops that we are [currently] working with.  There are other crops that are important to our diets and can make niche markets for us if we launch it together.  These can be referred to as herbs and spices, medicinal plants, new and exotic crops that are important to us as well.  From our own nutritional, dietary and export needs down to our vegetables, herbs and spices, the gamut in truth is wide.”

The idea of diversification also supports the overall vision for the sector by agriculture officials. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Samuel Carrette explained further.

“The vision for the sector is to build a sustainable agricultural sector that provides food development and prosperity for our country.  People often say we are an agriculturally based economy and this is largely true and as you know the sector still contributes about 12 to 15 percent GDP and employs about 25% of our population so it is still very significant.  It is the single most important sector in terms of employment especially for the rural communities as you know Dominica is about 50% rural.”
