MINISTERS CONGRATULATE PARTICIPANTS OF YOUTH PARLIAMENT

Ministers of Government have congratulated thirty young people for their participation in the first annual Youth Parliament

The Government of Dominica through the National Youth Council hosted the two day event on March 23 and 24, where young people between the ages of eighteen and thirty five debated topics surrounding policy decisions and the development of Dominica.

During the opening ceremony on Wednesday, March 23 Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training and National Excellence, Hon. Octavia Alfred stated that by giving the country’s youth opportunities such as the Youth Parliament they are able to contribute to the further development of Dominica.

“The establishment of a Youth Parliament expands the national democracy and the inclusion of a group that is usually asked to be seen and not heard too often. But today we are placing you in a prominent space. Data shows that all around the world, young people are excluded, under-employed, underpaid, and are among the largest group of unemployed persons. By giving you the young people of Dominica greater visibility, urgency and advocacy in the country’s affairs through Youth Parliament, added to other policies for education, training and decent work, jobs, technology access, sports and property ownership we are opening a new path for Dominica’s youth to serve and keep a viable national population by contributing our skills energy and talent to the national cause,” Minister Alfred stated.

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Youth at Risk Hon. Dr. Adis King congratulated the young people taking the opportunity to represent the country’s youth in Parliament.

She noted that the topics debated at Parliament gives the youth the opportunity to express their opinions on national policy.

“The value of young people being given a platform to express their views and opinion is really priceless. It should therefore not be taken lightly. I encourage you to speak freely but respectfully. You are all considered intelligent and thus capable of excellent communication. The debate topics are of tremendous national importance. You have the opportunity to bring forward your views and draw out that of your peers. You have the opportunity to explain exactly how you as young parliamentarians would like to see the country progress over the next few years. This is your stage. You will be able to influence policy decisions with your debate,” Dr. King stated.

Meanwhile, Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Irving McIntyre old the participants that Government is proud of their achievements. He also commended the National Youth Council for their commitment to the development of students.

“From your seat in the House of Assembly, you will inspire your peers and demonstrate the strength of the youth voiced in guiding policy and initiating change in a society. I congratulate the executive of the National Youth Council for organizing this activity. This speaks volumes to your commitment to youth empowerment and the creation of opportunities for the growth of the youth both personally and professionally. The Government of Dominica is extremely proud of our achievement and we look forward with anticipation to your recommendations you will make to address the challenges faced by our people,” Dr. McIntyre stated.
