Six Dominican students have received full academic scholarships from the Government of the People’s Republic of China to pursue studies in key development fields.
A ceremony to officially present their students with their scholarships was held at the Chinese Embassy in Roseau. The event highlighted not only the recipients’ academic achievements but also the deepening ties between Dominica and China.
The scholarships cover undergraduate and postgraduate studies in areas such as civil engineering, telecommunications, and biological sciences—disciplines closely aligned with Dominica’s national development priorities.
Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning, Vocational Training, and National Excellence, Hon. Octavia Alfred, praised the students for their hard work and commitment.
“It is your diligence, your discipline, and your determination that brought you to this moment,” she told the scholarship recipients. “Your achievement, your commitment to learning, and your potential to shape the future have set you apart.”
Minister Alfred revealed that this year saw the highest number of applicants for the Chinese government scholarship, making the final selection particularly competitive. She expressed personal pride in the group chosen.
“So, you should be saying, I made it! I offer you my sincere congratulations,” she said. “You’re leading a new generation of scholars, innovators and leaders.”
Hon. Alfred urged the recipients to carry the honor with humility and to maintain their connection to Dominica throughout their academic journeys.
“Too often we send people out there and they graduate, not even turning back to say thank you or reporting back to the Ministry of Education,” she said. “You don’t just go off on a scholarship and never turn back. I hope these six people are never going to do that.”
She also noted with satisfaction that the chosen fields of study—ranging from civil engineering to telecommunications—reflect the students’ awareness of ongoing national projects like the international airport, geothermal plant, tourism development, and the digital economy.
“I looked at your courses of study and I’m impressed. You seem well aware of what is going on in the country, and you’ve aligned your dreams with those developments. That tells me you’re on top of things.”
Minister Alfred reminded the students that their scholarship is more than a personal achievement—it is a national investment.
“This scholarship is not just about financial support. It is a symbol of trust. A national investment in your potential and your dreams. A recognition of your ability to contribute meaningfully to society.”
“Carry this honor with humility and determination. Let it fuel your journey—not only for yourself but for your families, your communities, and your country. Let Dominica be well pleased with you,” Minister Alfred added.
Chinese Ambassador His Excellency Chu Maoming echoed similar sentiments in his remarks, applauding the students and emphasizing China’s commitment to international educational exchange. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Dominica in 2004, more than 200 Dominican students have benefited from this scholarship program.
“Studying in China serves as a key that unlocks doors of opportunity,” he said. “You will have access to world-class research facilities, technological innovation, and a civilization that is not a relic of the past, but a vibrant, living culture.”
Ambassador Maoming urged the students to immerse themselves in Chinese society and to share their own culture in return.
“When you introduce Creole culture to your Chinese friends or share traditional customs like dumpling-making and Hanfu on TikTok, you are building something far greater than cultural exchange—you are creating lasting human connections.”
He also stressed China’s focus on shared development and cooperation, pointing to initiatives like the Belt and Road, and technological partnerships with universities like the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“We count on you to carry forward the legacy of this partnership,” the Ambassador said. “Be trailblazers of the new era, and the backbone of your country. Your hard work will contribute to Dominica’s resilience and digital transformation.”
Scholarship recipient Kezia Royer, speaking on behalf of the 25th cohort of Dominican students to study in China, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity.
“We do so with a strong sense of purpose, a spirit of academic curiosity, and a deep commitment to representing Dominica with excellence and integrity,” she said. “Your efforts, commitment, and partnership have opened the doors to world-class education and invaluable international experiences.”
Royer also thanked the Government of Dominica, the China Scholarship Council, and the Chinese Embassy for investing in Dominican youth, while acknowledging the support of families and mentors.
