A Call for Overseas-based Nationals to Serve Country

Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has told visiting overseas-based nationals that they can make a greater contribution to Dominica’s national development.

The Prime Minister in addressing a forum organised by the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit of the Ministry of Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs on Wednesday at the Krazy Koconuts suggested that nationals residing overseas make themselves available to Dominica in areas such as political and community service.

“We are saying to you that you must avail yourself to Dominica. I have said publicly that I believe while you may not be able to get elected to the Parliament of Dominica because you live overseas, you may not be able to service your constituency as we do in this Party, there is no reason why you shouldn’t serve as a senator of the parliament if you have a particular talent and skill which you can bring to the parliament.”

The Prime Minister noted that overseas nationals should find creative ways of utilising their skills and talent in Dominica. He said nothing should preclude them from making a contribution to Dominica even if they live abroad.

“Why can’t we have you, even if you live in St. Thomas or the United States, be represented on a board?  The suggestion is that you can join by video conference and make your contribution. I strongly believe that the concerns and the views and the suggestions that you have on the World Creole Music Festival, can be put forward to the committee. You don’t necessarily have to be living in Dominica to make a contribution to Dominica,” said PM Skerrit.
