The Cabinet of Dominica has approved the engagement of Sir Dennis Byron who will serve as the sole commissioner to advance efforts towards electoral reform in Dominica.
Sir Dennis was a former President of the Caribbean Court of Justice and Former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
“This was a firm commitment which we gave and notwithstanding the covid situation, we felt it was important for us to advance efforts towards electoral reform. Sir Dennis has indicated to us that he will commence the exercise in the month of September and he should be in a position to submit a final report by the end of December 2020. So this is good news for us and this is a commitment to us. Electoral reform for this Government is important, and it is important for the country,” Prime Minister Skerrit stated.
Prime Minister Skerrit says Sir Dennis is a well-respected individual in the Caribbean community.
“Sir Dennis is an exceptional Commonwealth citizen. The respect that Sir Dennis has beyond the Caribbean shores is really exceptional. I don’t think there’s any better person our country could find to conduct this exercise. So I am very happy and pleased and grateful to him for accepting. He was very busy but he felt he had to this for Dominica and we are very grateful to him squeezing some time for us on this exercise, and so we are very committed to this,” the Prime Minister added
