THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME (GEF SGP), IMPLEMENTED BY UNDP IS FUNDING PROJECT #DMA/SGP/OP6Y4/CORE/CC/2019/01: SUPPORTING YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE THROUGH 4-H CLUB INITIATIVES IN SCHOOL GARDENS AND BEEKEEPING IN THE ROSEAU VALLEY
Twenty two people who completed a basic bee-keeping training in May 2019, were presented with Certificates of Completion and bee-keeping start up tools and equipment at a closing ceremony on Friday 15th November at the Public Service Union Conference Room. Among the recipients were nine (9) females and thirteen (13) males which included three (3) secondary school Agriculture students.
The training programme was funded by the UNDP GEF-SGP as a component of a project to support youth in Agriculture and bee-keeping being implemented in collaboration with the National 4-H Local Leaders Association. The course which was facilitated by experienced bee-keeping Michal Lanns, included theory and practical sessions.
Remarks were given by the course facilitator, and one course participant, the National Coordinator and a member of the National Steering Committee of the GEF SGP, and Luis Francisco Thais, Head of the UNDP Dominica Project Office.
Participants encouraged the recently trained bee-keepers to go out and share the knowledge and skills to encourage other to get involved in the Apiculture Industry. They were also advised that they should not remain practicing as bee-keepers and move to be successful entrepreneurs involved in related aspects of business.
