Prime Minister Skerrit to “Hike with the Clergy”

Bishop of Roseau His Lordship Gabriel Malzaire, Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit and Tourism Minister Hon. Ian Douglas will be among several people who will hike segment thirteen of the much talked about Waitukubuli National Trail on Monday May seven 2012.

The activity dubbed- “Hike with the Clergy” will be the first for Dominica and will be held primarily to raise funds for a major conference of the diocesan priests of the province of Castries to be held in Dominica in January 2013.

The hike which is being done in collaboration with the Waitukubuli National Trail is considered to be a relatively easy one. The hike will begin in the village of Penville and will culminate in Capuchin.

Parish Priest of Portsmouth Father Herman Sharplis has been charged with the responsibility of coordinating the hike. He explained that people interested in participating in the hike should gather in Penville before 7:00 a.m.

“The hike will be a three and a half hour walk. People are asked to register in the various parishes. We are expecting people to come from all over Dominica”.

People interested in the hike will be asked to pay a registration fee of ten E.C dollars which will go towards Dominica’s hosting of the priest conference next year. The hike coordinator has encouraged Dominicans to cease the opportunity to participate in the hike, as the activity will seek to promote wellness and healthy living.

“There is a lot of talk about how big people have gotten, so we see this as an opportunity to encourage our people to come out and walk more”.

Sharplis explained further that the hike will also be an opportunity for Dominicans to discover and appreciate the island’s natural beauty.

“We need to take ownership of the trail. Why should people come from overseas and speak so highly of our trail and we don’t take advantage of it ourselves? The scenery on the trail is breathtaking and all who can, should take advantage of this opportunity”.

Sharplis added that the walk will end with a number of family fun activities.

“We are going to have talks from various officials and then we will have sporting activities and various performances. I want to assure Dominicans that it is going to be a day of tremendous socializing. We really want the Dominican public to come out in large numbers”.
