PM Skerrit remembers Charles Maynard as an outstanding regional Integrationist and Public Servant

“A man who was passionate about service to country and the O.E.C.S integration movement”…. that’s how Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit remembers Charles Maynard who died at the age of 78 on Tuesday May 08 at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Maynard who served as special advisor to the Prime Minister also served as Dominica’s Ambassador to Caricom and the O.E.C.S.

“Clearly the country has lost a great statesman, a committed son of the soil, who gave virtually all his adult life towards National Development. He was a great patriot, a nationalist, a regionalist an integrationist and someone who loved his country and gave his all.”

Prime Minister Skerrit said he had the distinct pleasure of knowing H.E Charles Maynard personally and professionally.

“My association with him goes way back to the late 1980’s early 1900’s because of his closeness to my family. On a professional Government level, he was a trusted and committed person who offered sound and constructive advice to me and the government on many issues”.

The Dominica leader said Charles Maynard served as Dominica’s Ambassador to the O.E.C.S Region and Caricom with distinction and his contribution should not go unnoticed.

“I believe that the records will show in the integration process particularly at the O.E.C.S level that he played a pivotal role in the creation of the economic union. He was Dominica’s representative on the commission and in his capacity he was very instrumental and brought to bear on these sessions and meetings his own experience. So he will certainly be given recognition for his contribution in that regard”.

Prime Minister Skerrit added that H.E. Maynard was passionate about service to country even in his final days.

“Up to the last days even when I went to visit him he asked questions about CARICOM, about the O.E.C.S and the Economic Union. He was really passionate about what he did. I have no doubt that every single Dominican will recognize his own contributions to Dominica’s development”.

The Prime Minister has extended condolences to the family and friends of the late Ambassador.

“One can never be prepared for the loss of any family member, but we pray to God that his wife and his family will get the strength and the courage they need to overcome their loss. He had a good fight and I think at the end he was victorious and I am sure the good Lord will receive him with open arms in heaven”.

Ambassador Charles Maynard, a former Minister of Government under the Eugenia Charles Administration will receive an official funeral by the Government of Dominica at a date to be announced shortly.
