DOMINICA TO HOST ECVA TOURNAMENT FROM SEPTEMBER 20 2023

The Dominica Amateur Volleyball Association (DAVA)is ready the host the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Nine teams will participate in the tournament from September 20 to 25 in Dominica at the Massacre Indoor Sporting Facility.

President of the DAVA gave an overview of the upcoming tournament. He says the team has been in training for a while and a great performance is expected.

“Come September 20th, eight teams from across the OECS will descend on our island to do battle with the home team Dominica. It is the 2023 Under-23 Female Volleyball Tournament.  This competition will take place at the Massacre Indoor Facility. The participating teams are from the countries of Grenada, St. Vincent, British Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, Antigua, Anguilla, Saba, Dutch St. Martin and host country, Dominica.  our team has been in training for some time now. Most of the players were on the team that represented Dominica at the ALBA Games in April and also the inter Secondary Schools Competition held in Grenada in July. So our team does have some competition exposure and we are looking for some good performances from them,” Mr. LoBlack stated.

Marketing Executive Officer from the Discover Dominica Authority, Ms. Lise Cuffy says tournaments like these will help develop sports tourism in Dominica.

“We are extremely pleased that our Caribbean sister islands can join us fro this sporting event which brings so many of us together. Sports tourism is important to Dominica. It is a great support in our economy that creates good jobs and opportunities for our people. Sports tourism has put Dominica on the global map. It enhances our international standing and branding and strengthens our positon as a global Caribbean node and a vibrant livable destination. We support sports tourism, because we like you believe that we can pursue and achieve our aspirations together. To the visiting teams, you can count us for great Dominican hospitality, a creole culture that is incomparable to anything in any part of the world; a peaceful and loving environment and of course a unique experience to discover the magic of sports in the fulfilled atmosphere  of our island,” Ms. Cuffy noted.

Meanwhile Sports Coordinator Mr. Trevor Shillingford says efforts have been made over the years to develop the sport around the island with various programmes and the improvement of facilities.

“The path for the further development of volleyball is further strengthened with the establishment of volleyball academies and the emergence of volleyball clubs in the out districts. The staging of school competitions and national leagues are also among positive steps towards the further development of the sport. These championships and festivals provide an avenue for matching of skills through organized and structured competitions. The development and improvement of facilities is another positive sign towards the development of the sport of volleyball. There are more facilities today for training and also competition. These improved facilities have enabled the DAVA to take the sport to the rural areas,” Mr. Shillingford added.
