Discover Dominica Authority News Update (March 16, 2012)

** Dominica participated in Martinique Trade Show**.
Dominica participated in the 14th edition of the Martinique Travel Fair – Salon du Voyages et des Vacances.  This trade show is an annual event held at the Palais de Congres in Madiana, Schoelcher.  As many as 20,000 visitors visit the three day trade show seeking vacation packages.  This year’s event was held from March 2 – 4, 2012.  A new feature at the event was the presence of Miss Dominica 2012, Nadira Lando.  Miss Lando provided visitors to Dominica’s booth with information, took photos, mingled with the crowd and visited other booths.  The presence of Miss Dominica 2012 served to draw attention and traffic to Dominica’s booth.  Fort Young Hotel, Chez Ophelia, Comfortel de Champ, Anchorage Hotel, Sunset Bay Club and Wacky Rollers participated in the trade show.  Private sector representatives at the show were quite satisfied with the number of contacts established and prospects for visits to Dominica.

 

**Discover Dominica Authority partnered with L’Express des Iles on sales challenge initiative**

Discover Dominica Authority in partnership with L’Express des Iles has organized a sales challenge for travel agents in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Travel agents will have to book visits to Dominica for customers on L’Express des Iles over a 6 week period.  The agent who sells the most L’Express des Iles tickets for visits to Dominica in 2012 within the sales challenge period, wins a three night trip to Dominica.  The winner of the contest will be announced on April 10, 2012.   Sales calls were made to ten travel agents in Guadeloupe and seven in Martinique to promote the sales challenge.  Travel agents were excited about the challenge and look forward to boosting sale of ferry tickets to Dominica.

 

** Dominica participated in ITB Berlin Trade Show**

The Discover Dominica Authority participated in the ITB Berlin trade show from March 7 – 11, 2012. The CEO and Director of Tourism of the Discover Dominica Authority, representative of Tamarind Tree, Jungle Bay Resort & Spa and Fort Young Hotel along with the German market representatives, Tropical Consult participated at the event. Preliminary figures stated that 172,136 visitors attended the event with 113,006 being trade visitors.

ITB is one of the biggest shows in Europe and as an annual event, attracts destinations all over the word to Berlin, to meet with tour operators, agents and consumers looking for the next ideal destination for their clients or vacation spot. The show proved to be very successful for Dominica as we were able to include new tour operators on the list of those selling the island. It has been revealed that many more persons are showing interest in the island and operators such as DERTOUR and Meiers Weltreisen have reported an increase of 400% and double the number of room nights respectively in 2011 as compared with 2010.

Dominica is generating considerable interest in the German and Scandinavian market with other tour operators indicating their willingness to sell the island.

Through interactions with the public and trade it is believed that Dominica will see increased business from the German market.
