Discover Dominica Authority embark on paint-a-thon in Roseau

The Discover Dominica authority on the weekend of May 19 and 20, 2012 will focus on enhancing the look of six houses within the city of Roseau through a paint- a- thon exercise. The activity will be done as part of Tourism Awareness Month 2012.

The Roseau Paint-A-Thon is a new initiative by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) which was first presented last year in partnership with Harris Paints Dominica Ltd with sponsorship from National Bank of Dominica Ltd.

Director of Tourism Colin Piper says the activity is aimed at beautifying buildings in the city of Roseau with historic and architectural appeal. The houses will be chosen with the assistance of members of the (Society of Heritage Preservation and Enhancement) SHAPE.

“This year we will be focusing on the Hillsborough street area. We have identified some houses we just need to get the approval from property owners. We are trying to beautify Roseau in that way, we work with SHAPE to come up with the historic colors so hopefully after the third or fourth year [of doing this] there will be quite a few houses in Roseau displaying those wonderful colors.”

The paint a thon exercise will be carried out by volunteer teams from the Discover Dominica Authority, the National Bank of Dominica Ltd, Harris Paints Dominica Ltd, Ministry of Tourism & Legal Affairs, and Tourism students of the Dominica State College alongside qualified painters.

The houses painted during last year’s exercise were located on Cork Street, King George V Street, and Laing Lane, and included the home of the late Sir Clarence Seignoret, third President of Dominica, and the offices of the Dominica National Council of Women.

Tourism Awareness Month is celebrated annually in May under the banner: Tourism Is Everybody’s Business, Let’s Play Our Part, by the Discover Dominica Authority, Dominica Hotel & Tourism Association, Ministry of Tourism and tourism stakeholders and partners.
