Mayor of Roseau His Worship Cecil Joseph has described the continued littering in and on the banks of the Roseau River as unfortunate.
The Mayor, in an interview with GIS News on Monday explained that there are facilities in place, in the capital to ensure that garbage, including white goods are disposed of properly.
“There is a Litter Act and it is very clear on the manner in which we [dispose of our garbage.] The Council, in dealing with white goods, has always made clear the days in which those goods would be picked up. I know that the Solid Waste Management Corporation has a program for white goods as well and we have always asked people to inform us of their concerns regarding white goods so that we could literally pick it up for them and dispose of it. I am very disappointed at this time, in this modern age that people still continue to dump their white goods- like their fridges, washing machines, stoves and even bed frames into the rivers.”
The Roseau City Council, he noted, will continue to pay close attention to the situation.
“We shouldn’t as a people just decide on any given day that we should dump rubbish into the rivers because we do not have a place that we could dump it. If anyone is found doing this for sure we will take them to the courts and they will be charged according to what the rules and regulations of littering is. I would like to call on persons who are doing that to stop immediately. We will be monitoring it…to see how fast we can work on solving the situation.”
If the situation still exists, the matter will be brought before the council meeting as part of affairs to be discussed.
In the meantime, efforts will be made to remove what is presently in the river.
