The Dominica Social Security is celebrating its 45th anniversary under the theme “Celebrating Forty Five Years of Social Partnership and Protection.”
Celebration activities started with a church service at the Bethesda Methodist Church. The service was attended by Senior Minister and Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Honourable Reginald Austrie who represented Prime Minister, Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit; Speaker of The House of Assembly, Honourable Joseph Isaac; Members of Cabinet, Leader of the Opposition and Permanent Secretaries from various ministries.
Director of the Dominica Social Security, Mrs. Janice Jean-Jacques Thomas, described the milestone as significant for the Dominica Social Security, noting that over the 45 years, the DSS has been beneficial to many Dominicans specifically the elderly.
The Director noted that this is an occasion to pause and acknowledge the contribution of those who laid the foundation for this institution.
“It is also a moment for all of us as stakeholders to focus on our individual and collective responsibilities in ensuring the proper functioning of the system and strengthening its ability to serve future generations as it has past generations throughout its existence. So as we celebrate, let us do so with a spirit of gratitude and the resolve to continue to uphold the solidarity principal which is at the core of social security,” Mrs. Janice Jean-Jacques Thomas stated.
Other activities carded for the week are visits to secondary schools, donations to charitable organizations, a launching of video documentaries and a radio programme highlighting social security’s accomplishments over the years among others.
