Ten local charities and other institutions benefitted from Christmas cheer after receiving food baskets as the Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security hosted their annual Food Basket Donation.

The donation is held annually in collaboration with farmers, and can be seen as evidence of the hard work of Dominican farmers throughout the year.

Dr. Reginald Thomas who is the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Agriculture and National Food Security, stated that the presentation of the agricultural produce supplies by farmers and the abattoir is a reflection of the Government’s commitment to assisting these institutions which take care of the country’s most vulnerable people.

“The Ministry’s name involves National Food Security and we take that responsibility very seriously, and while our programs are intended to assist farmers, the ultimate goal is that of obtaining and maintaining food security,” PS Thomas stated.

The recipients were the Dominica Infirmary, Chances, Mahaut Seniors Citizens Home, House of Hope, Love One Teach One Foundation, Operation Youth Quake, Home for the Aged (Portsmouth), Grotto Home, The Dominica China Friendship Hospital, And The Portsmouth Hospital.

Dr. Thomas added that the donation is also an indicator of the Ministry’s efforts of maintaining food security during the pandemic.

“This year has been particularly challenging to us. We have been faced with this global pandemic. But despite these challenges we have been able as a country, as a people, to maintain our food security. We have able to continue to provide support to the countries that depend on us for food,” Dr. Thomas explained.
