Acting on a declaration made earlier this year to give Dominicans the opportunity to name the New West Bridge, the Office of the Prime Minister has launched a site to allow the public to make submissions.
Speaking at the opening of the bridge on May 1st, 2017, Hon. Prime Minister, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit alerted the public that within six months the opportunity to name the bridge would be granted.
“It is today built as the New West Bridge but clearly five, ten, twenty years from now it cannot be so called because it would not still be new. That is why I think we have to find a name for it, we have immortalise this chapter in our nation’s page of history. I do not wish unilaterally to impose a name on you. I want for each of you to go away from here this evening thinking of a suitable and fitting name for this impressive new piece of Dominican architecture and engineering. Very soon we shall make public the website to which you can go and suggest an appropriate name for this gateway.”
Persons wishing to make submissions can log on to www.opm.gov.dm/names.
In addition to the new west bridge, the public can also suggest names for
The new national hospital, select wards at the new national hospital and the national multi sports complex.
The Hon Prime Minister is expected to name Government’s choice of a new name for the bridge during his Independence speech on November 3rd, 2017.
