Residents of the Kalinago Territory have been assured that they will receive additional funds from the Dominica Labour Party administration in the new financial year under the Small Business Development Fund.
The Honourable Member of Parliament for the Salybia Constituency, Cassius Darroux, gave that pledge at a town hall meeting in Sineku last Wednesday.
In August 2015, the Rural Based Enterprise was first established in Sineku as a pilot programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise and Small Business Development.
There, $500,000 was invested with focus on sewing, tour guide training, catering, art and capacity building.
Hon Darroux explained that this was geared at empowering the people of the Kalinago Territory and “putting the relevant mechanisms in place to cultivate a culture of creativity and innovation and entrepreneurship.”
In June, approximately one hundred individuals were assisted under the small business development fund. “I can guarantee us that more funds will be approved for us to continue the small business development in the upcoming financial year and it will be more than $0.5M,” Hon Darroux assured.
Tools and equipment for farming, livestock production, agro-processing, tourism, catering and upgrading of existing facilities are among the areas that will be targeted for funding.
The Kalinago minister affirmed that this is all to positively impact the socio-economic wellbeing of the constituency and create employment for the Kalinago people.
