Hon. Prime Minister has shed light on the housing situation for the beneficiaries of the 36 government-constructed apartments in Elmshall assuring them that they will be in the apartments by the end of April.
The government-funded project was undertaken by a Chinese firm, the Shanghai Construction Company, through a soft loan from the People’s Republic of China as part of Government’s commitment to provide adequate, affordable housing through its Housing Revolution Programme.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Roseau last Thursday, Hon Skerrit said “98% of those apartments will go for people who are actually from Roseau Central.”
He said a committee will meet as soon as the week of March 20th to finalize the list of residents who should move in by Easter.
The Hon Prime Minister further informed that 60 units will be constructed in Roseau Central.
“We have earmarked another sixty units to be constructed on Kennedy Avenue around the Financial Center; the government will acquire this land very soon…” he said.
According to the nation’s leader, commercial space will be constructed on the ground floor of those units which will be made available to small businesses in Roseau who are subjected to high monthly rent.
Prime Minister Skerrit said since the inception of the Small Business Unit, Government has made available over $20M to small business development in Dominica. He informed that even more funds will be made available for nationals in Roseau Central.
