Hon Prime Minister and Minister for the Public Service Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit says the efforts of the island’s public officers towards the rebuilding of the island post Tropical Storm Erika must be appreciated.
The Dominica Leader made the comment as he addressed the official launch of activities leading up to Public Service Day on December 2nd.
“Amidst all of our rebuilding efforts we cannot lose sight of the many public officers who are dedicated and committed to working every day to keep the wheels of government turning to produce the results that we desire. I speak of those who in in carrying out their daily task exemplify the principles of industry, hard work, excellence and a true spirit of patriotism and national pride. The opportunity exists for all of us to excel and to transform our country into something better and grander than we had before. I encourage all of you to take up the challenge and responsibility.”
The theme for this year’s observance of public service day is ‘Embracing the challenge: rethink, rebuild, transform’.
It seeks to create an awareness of the social and economic challenges created by Tropical Storm Erika.
“The relocation of entire villages as a result of disaster has never been done before in our country. This has been and still is a challenge for government. Our friends in the region and internationally, despite their own economic problems, have come to Dominica’s aid in a massive show of support, whether through providing technical assistance, supplies or financially. We continue as a nation to be thankful and grateful to all of them.”
Secretary to the cabinet, Ambassador Steve Ferrol, took the opportunity at Wednesday’s launch to commend the public officers for their efforts post Tropical Storm Erika.
“I watched in amazement when people would show up would be given the available task and responsibilities that they were best suited for. Because the responsibilities were well defined they were able to carry out these responsibilities until the officials who were qualified to [do] the available tasks. In no time the control centre was fully operational and served with efficiency and precision.”
Activities leading up to Public Service Day on December 2nd include hikes, games night, sports day, community outreach and educational talks.
The activities will culminate with the public service awards ceremony at the state house.
