CXC/CSEC Examination results were released on Wednesday morning and Dominica has registered a sixty-seven point five (67.5) percent pass rate for 2012.
One thousand one hundred and fourteen (1,114) students from sixteen centres wrote the exams in thirty-one subject areas.
This year demonstrates a decline in performance from the 74.6% pass rate of 2011 when nine hundred and seventy (970) students wrote the exams.
Also in 2011, students wrote the exams in twenty-eight subject areas as compared to the thirty-one for this year.
For the first time ever, Dominica entered students to write the ‘theatre arts’ examination. Seven students from the Pierre Charles Secondary School sat that exam and records a one hundred percent pass.
The Isaiah Thomas Secondary School registered eighteen students to write the economics exam which resulted in a 77.8% pass rate.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday morning, Chief Education Officer, Stephenson Hyacinth revealed that for the first time that a Dominican student received eleven ones. That student was Cornell Jno Baptiste of St. Mary’s Academy.
Leah Dodds from The Convent High School also made Dominican history by securing ten ones.
According to the chief education officer, agricultural science double award, physical education and theatre arts were the subjects with the best overall performance with all students achieving acceptable grades.
Agricultural Science Single Awards also registered a high performance standard of 91.4% while Principles of Business registered 90.9%.
A list of top performing schools in this year’s CSEC exams with an overall pass above 80% was released.
The Chief Education Officer named those schools as well as the single most improved institutions.
“CHS received an overall average of 94.8. This is followed by the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School at 89% and St. Mary’s Academy at 80.3.Nehemiah Comprehensive High School with one student registered for the exam scored an 85.7% pass.”
Data also revealed that the Seventh Day Adventist School, the St. Martin Secondary School, Portsmouth Secondary and the Castle Bruce Secondary School obtained increases in their performance with the Portsmouth Secondary having the largest margin of increase followed by the Seventh day Adventist Secondary School.
Thirty-five students recorded at least six grade ones in the 2012 CSEC examinations.

Other top performing students were Leah V Dodds of CHS who got 10 Ones, Malik Stuart of PCSS who got 9 Ones and 1 Two.
Arlene S Ferrol, Jelanie Letang and Zarisia J Alcendor of CHS got 9 Ones, Kitwanie Carbon of CHS 8 Ones and 3 Twos and Melissa Morgan 8 Ones, 3 Two’s and 1 Three of Castle Bruce Secondary School.
