“On behalf of the Government and people of Grenada, and the peoples of the OECS family, I take this opportunity to express the greatest sympathy to the people of Dominica and to say that your brothers and sisters will be holding your hand as you recover from this disaster that we now face,” began Prime Minister of Grenada and OECS Chairman, Dr. Keith Mitchell.
He was addressing a press conference on Friday October 9th
The Grenadian Prime Minister, along with OECS Director-General, Dr. Didacus Jules visited Dominica on Friday and joined the Dominica leader to get a firsthand look at the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Erika.
With the experience of Hurricane Ivan in 2004 the Grenadian Prime Minister is well aware of the long road to recovery after such a disaster.
He pledged his continued support in the recovery efforts.
“I got up on the morning in September 2004 and when I looked around, I saw a whole country on the ground. I don’t think anyone ever wants to have that feeling. So I know how it feels, Grenadians as a whole understand what is taking place in Dominica, that is why, Prime Minister, there has been a lot of initiative not just from Government but from the people.”
He mentioned Grenadians in the diaspora who have mobilized to show support for Dominica.
“…Because they know and experienced what it is to be flattened.”
The Dominica leader thanked him for all his support.
He said, “There has always been a very strong bond of friendship and special love between Dominica and Grenada and the people of Grenada demonstrated that after the passage of Tropical Storm Erika and they continue to do so.
“I really want to publicly, on behalf of the people of Dominica, the generosity of the Prime Minister and the people of Grenada in these difficult times.”
Grenada will host a special day of artistic performances in support of Dominica’s relief efforts on November 7th.
